DAB Car Radios (DAB/DAB+) at Xtrons
The crisp connection and soothing, uninterrupted sound of a DAB car radio is unmistakable; it’s no surprise our customers are putting this feature towards the top end of their basic requirements when purchasing a new head unit.
And in case you were wondering why, we’ve covered a few of the FAQs surrounding DAB car radios.
DAB Car Radios – What is DAB?
Not to be confused with ‘the dab’ or ‘dabbing’ dance move, DAB is the digital technology behind traditional terrestrial radio and has been around longer than many may think. Launched in the UK in 1995, DAB receivers have been available for over two decades and have helped to improve the quality and robustness of radio.
What is DAB+?
Released in 2007, DAB+ is an upgraded version of the original, and is said to be twice as efficient, making listening to the radio a more enjoyable, ceaseless experience for the masses. It has a better error correction which can reduce problems in poor reception areas.
Good news: the upgrade can be as simple as downloading some new firmware or typing in a code.
Why are we switching to DAB+ Radio?
FM is full. It has peaked. It’s reached the limits of what it set out to do. Therefore, the future is digital, the future is DAB.
What are the advantages of DAB/DAB+ car radio?
With more readily available content from an array of stations at the touch of a button, DAB is now the people’s favourite. Features such as track and artist information on screen, digital sound quality, internet radio, and the ability to pause, rewind and record make DAB much more preferable. It has less unlicensed (pirate) station interference too.
In addition to this, more than 30 countries provide DAB/DAB+ broadcasts including: Australia, France, Germany, Honk Kong, Italy, Ireland, Norway, Spain, Sweden and the UK.

Can you use your existing FM or TV aerial?
It’s unlikely, but worth a try. For best results a DAB aerial is recommended.
Where can you get a DAB+ car radio solution?
Here at Xtrons, we provide two solutions for DAB+. Whilst some of our units have a built-in DAB+ tuner, others will accept a compact external DAB+ device to be connected, like the USBDAB01 or the DAB01.

How does the external DAB+ device work?
The Xtrons Dab+ device is compatible with an ever-increasing range of Android units. It’s as simple as connecting the device through the USB Port of the head unit, placing the antenna in the optimal position and click the DAB+ icon on the head unit. You could watch our installation video for the USB receiver stick, if you’re still unsure.
