Get That Goodwood Feeling
It’s getting towards the time of year that racing fans really care about. The Goodwood Festival of Speed is an annual hill climb and motor show, taking place in the glorious surroundings of Goodwood House in West Sussex. Nearly 150,000 people assemble to enjoy the thrill of racing, view some of the incredible vehicles on display, and to meet other car and motorsports enthusiasts.
The History of the Festival
While Goodwood is a location steeped in racing lore and history, this festival in particular dates back to 1993, when Lord March put into action his dream of bringing motor racing back to the Goodwood Estate. Since then the event has gone from strength to strength, bringing in more and more people and exhibitors to enjoy the love of motor vehicles. In fact, along with its sister show, the Goodwood Revival, which brings in enthusiasts of classic cars and machinery, Goodwood is perhaps THE destination for UK motor racing enthusiasts.
Top Things to See
The Hillclimb
The main event, and a huge reason why Goodwood is so popular. Cars from different areas of the show all compete to get the best time in their class on the circuit. The track is just over a mile long, so when conducted at these speeds it’s a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it affair, but the infamously slick and narrow course is a stiff challenge for even the best drivers. If you want high-octane thrills and a chance to see some incredible machines in action, be sure to find a vantage point for the races.
The Central Feature
Every year, a car maker is given the chance to build a centrepiece for the show. These sculptural follies are an iconic part of the festival, and each company tries to outdo each other year on year. In 2021, it was the turn of British maker Lotus, who provided a stunning AR (Augmented Reality) showpiece, allowing users to use their smartphones to bring the already impressive structure to life with animations. This year is the turn of BMW, who plan to celebrate the heritage of their M series performance cars. It’s sure to be a spectacular one.
The First Glance Paddock
If you want the inside track on what’s coming next in motoring, you’ll want to have a peek at the First Glance Paddock. Many cars are kept under wraps until the festival, so if you want to glimpse the future of motoring, you’ll just have to ensure you’re there and paying attention!
The Supercar Paddock
The world’s most desirable automobiles are here on display, with stunning styling and incredible engineering, every single one pushing the boundaries of what a car is capable of. While most of us won’t be lucky enough to own one of these dream machines, this is the perfect place to examine them and see them in action. And who knows, maybe one day your dream might come true?
The Forest Rally
For those who like their motor racing with a bit more grit and drama, the Forest Rally is the place to be. Drivers test their mettle on the single-lane dusty track, winding their way at breakneck speed through idyllic English woodland. Cars howl and screech their way through an incredibly challenging rally circuit, making for a thrilling spectacle. Not for the faint of heart

While travelling forward, your eyes should always be on the road. But what about when you’re reversing? You don’t have eyes in the back of your head, so there’s always a risk when heading backwards.
